The Deutsche Eishockey Liga, or DEL is a professional German ice hockey league formed back in 1994. It replaced the Eishockey-Bundesliga and is now the top-tier ice hockey league in Germany. In 2016-17 it was the second best attended league in Europe, with an average of 6,198 spectators getting their ice hockey tickets for each game! Adler Mannheim are one of six teams who have been in the DEL for the full 24 years. They frequently finish in the top half of the table, although they have two 10th place finishes in 2005-6 and 2015-16. The Fischtown Pinguins are the newest DEL team, having only played in the last two seasons. They placed 10th and 9th in these, however they could be like rivals EHC Red Bull München and make a big impact now they've found their feet. Simple ball and stick games played in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in the 18th and 19th century are thought to be the earliest origins of hockey. These games made it across the ocean to North America, where several similar variations of winter sports appeared. These included games called 'shinny' and 'ice polo' and used informal rules. Ice hockey as we know and love it today developed in Canada, notably Montreal, where the first indoor ice hockey game took place on March 3rd, 1875. The sport retains a huge popularity in Canada, where it's known simply as 'hockey'. By the 1880's, amateur ice hockey leagues began to develop, with professional leagues forming from around 1900 onwards. Ice hockey eventually became an Olympic sport, appearing first in the Summer Olympics of 1920 followed by its inclusion in the Winter Olympics in 1924. Ice hockey is an action-packed contact sport which is incredibly fast and exciting to watch. Each team has six players in the rink, including the goaltender. The teams have curved sticks with which to aim a hard rubber disk, or puck, at the opposing team's goal. A professional ice hockey game consists of three 20 minute 'periods' of play, with the clock only running whilst the puck is in play. The teams swap sides after the end of each period. Infractions of the rules are most simply treated by a player being sent to the penalty box for a set period of time, leaving their team to continue with a player short. Penalty shots are also sometimes rewarded if a player has been stopped from aiming at the goal due to the illegal actions of another player.
